Tuesday, January 21, is FOUSL’s regularly scheduled Board meeting. Current members or anyone else interested in FOUSL are welcome to attend. We meet at noon for informal discussion – bring your brown bag lunch – and the business meeting starts at 1:00 pm. The nominating committee is looking for people interested in being members of FOUSL Board of Directors for 2014 – to be elected at our annual meeting on Feb. 8. We need your input and energy!
So, what, exactly, does FOUSL do? We have several fundraising events each year: a book n bake sale on Memorial Day weekend, and a big book sale during Cascade Days in August. Sometimes we have book sales or bake sales at other times, too. We consign books through a bookseller in the Seattle area. We collect used print cartridges and small electronics for recycling.
With the earnings from these sources, we partially fund the Summer Reading Program at the library, pay for 10 or more library cards annually for Concrete school kids who cannot otherwise afford a card, purchase equipment for the library not provided for by the library district’s budget, and sponsor author talks, writing workshops, other events that are always free to everyone.
We support and encourage the library Board of Trustees and help out where we can.
So, if you love libraries, participate in or appreciate these events, show your support by joining FOUSL. Your $5 annual membership goes toward paying for various activities, and your volunteer time raising funds goes even further!
On February 8, 2014 the Upper Skagit Community is invited to meet our new librarian, Brooke Pederson, at the Upper Skagit Library Open House sponsored by FOUSL (Friends of the Upper Skagit Library), the Board of Trustees and library staff. Beverages and cookies will be available from 10 to 11AM at the library. We urge everyone to welcome Brooke and to visit with library supporters.
Following the open house, at 11:15 AM, FOUSL members, and those interested in becoming members, will meet at the Concrete Center for a potluck lunch. FOUSL’s annual meeting will start at 1:00 pm, with election of officers, annual reports, and discussion of proposed future activities. This a great way to spend a winter day, and an opportunity to visit and to meet new friends.
Our new website for Friends of the Upper Skagit Library is hosted on WordPress. This gives us an opportunity to have recent news right up front with little hassle. Please check here for the latest information about volunteer opportunities, meetings, and book sales.
